Last night I hung this page from Drew Canole on our refrigerator to help keep myself focused on basic juice recipes. It is easier for me to stay committed if the guess work is taken out for me. This is what Drew said about these juices:

“Wanna have healthy cells and body? Cellular Nutrition can be obtained only through a special blend of highly solvable vitamins and nutrients that help the body cells to absorb the nutrients and vitamins from foods and supplements. In order to get the inactive body cells to absorb vitamins and nutrients, they need to be cleaned up of toxins, that keep them inactive, and activated. These juices can help!”

My husband saw this and asked if I thought he should get a juicer for is office so he could have juice more often. Well, I just laughed. I love my husband and he is amazing at all the he does, but I cannot see him breaking out the kale and celery after a meeting to start juicing.

My solution was to make the juice for him and pack it in a cooler so he can have it throughout the day. I washed and cut the veggies and my 7-year-old juiced them, she had a blast. Forget the toys and the iPad, she had more fun with the juicer than most things I have seen her play with. It took us about 20 minutes to make the juice you see in this picture. I ran out of larger mason jars, so I had to use a combination of two small ones. The filled mason jar helps prevent the juice from oxidizing and losing nutrients — make sure you fill them to the tip top. And yes, I numbered them for him, so he knew which order to drink them in. You don’t see the lemon water in this picture because he drank it before he left the house.

The orange one was delicious. You can freeze this juice in a pop mold to make a healthy treat.

I have been trying to find fresh turmeric for some time now. I was not able to find it at any of my local grocery stores until I visited an international grocery store the other day. I was like a kid in a candy store when I saw it! I think I actually sped up when I eyed it and grabbed a bag as quick as I could :). I have read so much about turmeric and the benefits are truly amazing.

Turmeric is one the most thoroughly researched plants in existence today. Its medicinal properties and components (primarily curcumin) have been the subject of over 5600 peer-reviewed and published biomedical studies. A five-year long research project on this sacred plant has revealed over 600 potential preventive and therapeutic applications, as well as 175 distinct beneficial physiological effects. Given the sheer density of research performed on this remarkable spice, it is no wonder that a growing number of studies have concluded that it compares favorably to a variety of conventional medications, including: Lipitor, Corticosteroids, Prozac, Aspirin and many more. (Source)

Studies have also shown that curcumin, a compound in turmeric, may reduce inflammation in the body. Inflammation damages healthy tissue, raises blood pressure and can cause cancer cells to grow. Most diseases such as arthritis, asthma, allergies, cancer, Alzheimer’s diabetes and heart disease, have an underlying basis in inflammation.

The UMMC says curcumin has been suggested to prevent, manage and possibly treat a number of cancers, including breast, colon, prostate and skin cancers based on test tube and animal research. Turmeric may also help prevent the accumulation of plaque that can obstruct arteries and lead to heart attack or stroke. Animal research found an extract of turmeric helped improve cholesterol levels, according to the UMCC. It’s uncertain whether the same effect would occur in humans. (Source)

As with everything, I believe moderation is best when using turmeric. I like to eat a variety of fresh foods without getting fixated on one thing (with the exception of lemon — if you have been following my blog for a while now, you know how much I love lemon and I go through at least 4-5 a day). With turmeric, liver toxicity and stomach upset are possible when taken in large doses or for extended periods. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center warns people with liver disease to avoid taking turmeric. Diabetics should use extra caution before taking turmeric since it can lower blood sugar levels. Turmeric also may interfere with blood-thinners such as aspirin, warfarin, brand name Coumadin, or clopidogrel, sold as Plavis, and may affect the blood’s ability to clot, cautions UMMC. Turmeric may also interfere with antacids including famotidine, brand name Pepcid, and ranitidine, sold as Zantac. (Source)

Just as it’s important to select and consume wholesome, unprocessed organic foods, you should do the same with herbs and spices. If the herb or spice is processed or not organically grown, you risk missing out on their most potent active ingredients, which provide you with optimal benefits. You can find turmeric in the spice aisle of your local grocery store, but this is not an optimal choice due to the quality of these herbs and spices. Even though there may be some good spices available in the spice isle, it’s very difficult to verify their purity and potency. Lastly, the turmeric powder you buy in your store is a spice. It doesn’t necessarily come from high-quality organic herbs — and may not be produced using certified organic processes, causing you to risk missing its healthful benefits. (Source)

When using turmeric in juice, I suggest lightly peeling a 2-inch piece. Put the turmeric in the juicer first (when using a small item or piece of an item for taste, you should insert that item during the first half of the juicing process because the full taste may not come through if inserted at the end). If using in a smoothie, add 1/4-1/2 inch, lightly peeled.

This juice is surprisingly refreshing and smooth. It was one of the more enjoyable combinations I have made. You will notice a produce spray in the juice picture, this is the spray I use to wash my fruits/veggies. Water alone does not clean fruits and vegetables. Vermont Soap Organics Produce Magic is my favorite.

During our recent juicing journey, I have come to learn that you can juice just about anything… except chocolate chips, which my 3-year-old continually asks if we can “juice them” :). In talking to my friends about juicing, the question as to what you can vs. what you can’t juice always comes up. There are far more items you can juice vs. items you can’t juice.

Avoid Juicing

Rinds: You should always peel your oranges and grapefruits because they are bitter. If your lemons and limes are organic, you can juice those. If they are not organic, they should be peeled.

Bananas: These are best in the blender, in baked goods or whole. They have very little juice and it would be waste of time and produce to juice them.

Avocado: These have very little juice. They are best in a smoothie, salad or whole.

Rhubarb: Simply does not taste good.

Coconut: Very hard on your juicer and will not yield very much juice.

Okra: Very slimy and will not yield much juice.

Potatoes: Sweet potatoes taste good when juiced. Regular potatoes have very little nutrition and are not sweet, thus it is best to avoid juicing these.

Mushrooms: Will not yield any juice.

Mustard Greens: Bitter and strong. They will yield juice, but are not enjoyable at all. Other leafy greens taste much better and provide as much, if not more, nutrition.

Edamame or Soybeans: Will not yield any juice.

Leeks: Very pungent. Best used when cooking.

* Avoid juicing anything that is not organic. It is better to not juice at all than to juice vegetables that are non-organic. When you juice, the contents hit your bloodstream within 15 minutes — juicing non-organic is like giving yourself an injection of pesticides and herbicides.

Of all the new things we have tried since February, I am the most excited about juicing. My husband and kids surprised me with a juicer for Mother’s Day this year and we have been juicing ever since. The two most exciting things to me about the juicing is the amount of energy & mental clarity it provides and how much my kids enjoy juicing and making their own recipes. My 3-year-old asks on a daily basis if she can “make her recipe.” It has gotten them excited about fruits and vegetables! (Mostly fruits, but we are slowly working in the vegetables). In talking to my friends about our juicing adventures the four most common questions are about what juicer to buy, is it a pain to clean, why is it beneficial and how does it taste. So friends, this blog is for you :).

There are basically two different types of juicers you can buy, a centrifugal juicer or a masticating juicer. My husband did a lot of research before purchasing the juicer and he came to the conclusion that a masticating juicer was the best option for us. Once he narrowed that down, he made his decision based on availability (he bought it the day before Mother’s day so needed it quickly) and price. There are so many juicers to choose from, we have no other juicer to compare with ours and we are far from the experts on the subject, but we are very happy with the one he chose — we have the Omega J8006 Nutrition Center Juicer. This juicer is extremely easy to assemble, operate, and clean. I have read countless blogs and articles about different juicers and most of them recommend different ones, so it is very difficult to figure out the “perfect” juicer. So, all I can do is talk about our juicer and the benefits we have found from it. Here is a good site to read about different juicers and price compare.

A centrifugal juicer spins at high speeds. During the spinning motion, the vegetables are ground to a pulp. The spinning motion then forces the juice away from the pulp. The juice then pours into a bowl.

Masticating means to chew, to grind or knead into a pulp — a masticating juicer grinds vegetables and literally squishes out the juice. Since a masticating juicer works at low speeds and with no spinning action, it tends to juice many vegetables more efficiently. Although I cannot personally compare, I have read on various sites that a masticating juicer tends to be a lot more quiet, less messy and easier to clean.

I learned a lot about juicing and its benefits from the Gerson Institute. Gerson Therapy is a natural treatment that boosts the body’s own immune system to heal cancer, arthritis, heart disease, allergies, and many other degenerative diseases. Dr. Max Gerson developed the Gerson Therapy in the 1930s, initially as a treatment for his own debilitating migraines, and eventually as a treatment for degenerative diseases such as skin tuberculosis, diabetes and, most famously, cancer.

The Gerson Institute does not recommend centrifugal juicers because the centrifugal force throws the pulp against a basket screen through which the juice is strained, while the pulp remains. Dr. Gerson said of centrifugal juicers: “When the grinding wheel rotates against a resistance with insufficient access of air, positive electricity is produced and induces negative electricity on the surrounding wall. The exchange of positive and negative ions kills the oxidizing enzymes and renders the juice deficient.” – Dr. Max Gerson, MD

Centrifugal juicers expose the juice to heat and oxygen, killing off the essential healing enzymes in the juice. These juicers have difficulty in juicing leafy greens. Without the pressing action to extract the juice, many minerals and phytochemicals remain in the pulp, so the juice rendered is less rich in healing nutrients than juice from masticating juicers. Centrifugal force is less effective in extracting juice than the pressing action of other juicers, meaning that more produce is required to make less juice. An inefficient juicer may be cheaper in the short term, but will be more expensive in the long run, as it necessitates spending more money on produce.

If you decide to purchase a juicer, I highly recommend following Drew Canole on Facebook. If you do not have a Facebook account, you can visit his website. I have learned so much in the past month about juicing from his site. One of the most important things I have learned from him are the benefits of live juice. This information and a compilation of his recipes can be found in his book Juicing Recipes.

According to Drew, the body needs live food to build live cells. When we eat live foods, our bodies consume the liquid immediately and then pass on to the lower digestive tract all of the excess. He compares juicing to an IV of energy-rich foods pumped immediately into your organs, supplying all the quintessential nutrients you need for the day. The juice from the juicer is much better for you than any juice you can buy from the store, or even at the local farmer’s market. When juice sits on a counter or in the fridge, it oxidizes and loses the lion’s share of nutrients. Plus, juice from a juicers is not pasteurized, meaning it isn’t cooked or boiled to help it stay on the shelf longer. The fresh juice is literally bursting with live energy ready to heal, pump, and energize you all day. – Information provided by Drew Canole.

Another question I have received is why juice vs. blend. Juicing is the most potent detoxification method, because your body does not need to engage in the energy intensive act of digestion. So, while you are providing your body with super nutrition, you are allowing it to divert its energy to the healing process rather than digestion. A vegetable/green juice is a super nutrient dense way to alkalize your body, and infuse your cells with a high dose of phytonutrients. – Information provided by RawganicVegan

Using a blender puts pulp into your juice, which is the same thing as eating the whole thing. Your body still has to expend energy to break it down. While your body does need fiber, the juicer provides you with a cup of pure, unadulterated vitamins and minerals. Ninety-five percent of the nourishment from fruit and vegetable juice is immediately released into the blood stream because there is nothing interfering with the processing once it hits your stomach. “If you are trying to naturally lose weight, vegetable juicing is best. The minerals and high-potassium content hydrate your cells and force out the sodium that causes water retention. Regularly drinking vegetable juice helps super-boost your health and remove toxins in your body. Many green drinks are effective at pushing out excess water and toxins that could be causing your cells to retain fat.” – Drew Canole

Smoothies contain a lot of fiber. Fiber is important for colon health, lowering cholesterol, and many other bodily functions. But if you eat a healthy diet consisting of fruits and vegetables, you are already getting plenty of fiber, and smoothies are not necessary. If you do decide to consume smoothies, be certain that you “chew” the liquid smoothies in your mouth for a bit to activate the carbohydrate digesting enzymes in your mouth. If you drink your smoothies with a straw and just gulp them down, you are hampering digestion by bypassing an important step, and may have bloating, gas and weight gain as a result. – Information provided by RawganicVegan

If one of your goals is to get greens into your kids, like spinach and kale, my recommendation would be to incorporate these into a smoothie rather than a juice. The juice will probably be too strong for the kids to handle. Here is one of our favorite smoothie recipes that incorporates kale and spinach.

As far as taste is concerned, it tastes like what it is :). To be brutally honest, with some of the recipes, you have to just guzzle and not think about it. My son had hockey tryouts this morning so I made him carrot, apple and cucumber juice. He didn’t love it, but I told him to hold his breath and drink it quick and he did. It is amazing how fast it goes down. I am guessing because it is so pure, it is really easy to drink. When starting with your kids, or even yourself, add some fruits in with the vegetables to sweeten the juice. I have found that pineapple is a great accompaniment to kale and dandelion greens, it really takes the edge off the bitter greens.

One more thing to note it the type of produce you purchase. It is very important to purchase organic. Avoid juicing anything that is not organic. It is better to not juice at all than to juice vegetables that are non-organic. When you juice, the contents hit your bloodstream within 15 minutes — juicing non-organic is like giving yourself an injection of pesticides and herbicides. You will always need to peel citrus fruits regardless if they are organic or not. You do not need to peel ginger or beets — you can even juice the leaves of beets which are full of wonderful minerals and nothing goes to waste!

There is so much more information out there and so much to learn, so this is just the very tip of the iceberg. I hope this helps those of you that had questions about juicing. If you do decide to juice, I would love to hear about your experience. It has been nothing but wonderful for us — we feel so healthy and full of energy and my wish would be for everyone to feel this way.
