Real Watermelon Margaritas

My friend Linda had a happy hour at her house this past weekend and we decided to make margaritas. We made them with frozen watermelon and they were amazing. My friend Lesli said they tasted like a watermelon jolly rancher. They were so much better than they Jose Cuervo margaritas I used to make.  Here is a list of ingredients in the Jose Cuervo Margarita Mix (items in red are likely genetically modified):

Water, corn syrup, sugar, citric acid, natural flavors, sodium citrate, sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate (to preserve flavor), cellulose gum, polysorbate 60, gum arabic, glycerol abietate and FD&C yellow no. 5.

It is absolutely unnecessary to put these ingredients into your body. While this recipe does take more time to prepare, it is worth every second if you consider the benefits of watermelon. Watermelon is packed full of nutrition, hydrates and is low-fat. It is an excellent of vitamin A, which helps maintain eye health and is an antioxidant; vitamin C, which helps to strengthen immunity, heal wounds, prevent cell damage, promote healthy teeth and gums; and vitamin B6, which helps brain function and helps convert protein to energy. Watermelon has the highest concentrations of lycopene of any fresh fruit or vegetable. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that helps fight heart disease and several types of cancer — prostate cancer in particular. Watermelon is also a great source of potassium, which helps muscle and nerve function, helps maintain the body’s proper electrolyte and acid-base balance, and helps lower the risk of high blood pressure. Lastly, it also contains the amino acids citrulline and arginine, which can help maintain arteries, blood flow and overall cardiovascular function.

This recipe takes “drink responsibly” to a new level :).
